The pier brown trout bite is on at South Haven. Warmer water pouring out of the Black River is concentrating bait, and browns plus a few coho are within casting range of the north pier from sunup to about 9am.
Cast parallel to the pier or angle the spoon out toward the green can. Slow steady retrieve. The fish will hit on the lift or the drop more than the steady part — work the rod tip.
Fish in the 5–8 lb range have been the average, with a couple of 12 lb browns landed this week. Coho mixed in 4–6 lbs.
A reminder — the pier ladders are slick. Bring a long-handled net or a friend. Do not freelance on the rocks without ice cleats and a PFD.
